Ensure Human Safety With Effective Wire Rope Inspection

Mr. Anurag Tripathi,
Team Leader – Business Development & Marketing,
Arora Technologies Pvt. Ltd.

These days, most of the wire ropes are tested visually. Now, imagine a situation where an inspector has visually inspected the wire ropes with some broken wires on the surface and he decides to continue the usage of wire ropes in the absence of any acceptance criteria, or a case where the operator’s knowledge is the only acceptance criteria.

The issue here is that, the operator has only inspected 20% of the wire rope area (metallic cross-section), which is what he can see visually; the remaining 80% of the wire rope area (half of outer wire, inner wires and core) goes uninspected which can lead to catastrophic failure of the wire rope resulting in loss of lives.

This Problem Can Be Solved By Electro-Magnetic Wire Rope Inspection

Electro-Magnetic Wire Rope Inspection is based on Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL). In MFL technique, the test object is uniformly magnetized, close to magnetic saturation. If any defect is present in the object, due to reduction in effective magnetic permeability and cross-sectional area, magnetic flux lines leak out of the object surface around the defect. The leakage flux is then measured using magnetic field sensors and can be correlated with the shape and size of the defect responsible for the leakage flux.

The Solution – Intros

We offer a product “Intros” from M/s. Intron Plus, Russia who are a pioneer in the industry and use strong permanent magnets to magnetically saturate the rope under inspection. Only in case of magnetic saturation, it is possible to obtain high accuracy and sensitivity of the instrument.
